The Serious Physical Child Abuse
and SIDS Program provides high quality, up-to-date training
to professionals involved in physical child abuse and child
death cases. The Shaken Baby Alliance has partnered with leading
experts in the field of child abuse, and agencies throughout
Texas and the United States to develop outstanding training
to meet the needs of professionals. This training is based
on the philosophy that professionals with a strong foundational
understanding of the medical aspects of physical abuse and
forensic investigative techniques will be provided with the
tools necessary to investigate and prosecute cases of child
abuse, resulting in the protection of our children.

Topics covered:
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Natural death vs. homicide
- Medical Aspects of Physical Child Abuse. An overview of
physical child abuse including skin injuries (bite marks,
bruises, burn injuries), fractures, abdominal injuries, and
head injuries.
- Forensic Investigative Techniques. Utilizing joint investigations,
scene investigation & reconstruction, interviewing techniques,
record gathering, timeline development, and case preparation
to develop strong cases.
- Legal Aspects . How investigators, prosecutors, and other
professionals involved in physical child abuse cases can
impact a case from offense to prosecution, including charging
options, preparing for trial, expert witnesses, demonstrative
evidence, punishment issues and information for testifying
in court.
- Tools You Can Use! An overview of the services available
from The Shaken Baby Alliance for investigators and attorneys
working physical child abuse cases.
- Victim Family Impact. A family member of a child abuse
victim shares their story of the tragedy and how the professionals
involved impacted the family’s life forever.

This training is the collaborative effort of investigators, medical
personnel and educators in the field of child maltreatment, experts
who work daily in the field they are teaching.
